Massa Marittima is an Italian town in the province of Grosseto, located in the Metalliferous Hills of Grosseto, it is considered the main center of the entire hilly area.
The town of Massa Marittima has Etruscan origins and it is still possible to find medieval decorations and signs; is divided into 2 parts, the lower and oldest part of the city where the Romanesque style predominates, and the upper and “modern” part of the city, which actually dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries.
The city is the ideal place to venture if you love ancient art, in fact there are ancient monuments dating back to the 1200s, such as the Palazzo dell’Abbondanza, which at the beginning was the city’s grain store, characterized by its 3 ogival arches; recently a fresco was found nearby.
But the greatest attraction for lovers of art resides in the Cathedral of Massa Marittima and in its Piazza Garibaldi, considered one of the most beautiful squares of the whole Tuscany thanks to its innumerable Medieval buildings and obviously also thanks to the Duomo, defined one of the finest examples of Roman Gothic architecture.
